  4. Pupil Voice: An Early Years Resource PDF on CD
    £7.50
Pupil Voice: an early years resource This resource has been written in response to the DCSF “Working together” guidance (DCSF; May 2008). The guidance defines participation as, “... adults working with children and young people to ensure that their views and values are heard in the taking of decisions that effect them, and that they are supported in making a positive contribution to their school and local community” (p4). In the introduction to the guidance, Jim Knight, Minister for Schools, says, “Giving children and young people a say in decisions that affect them can improve engagement in learning, help develop a more inclusive school environment and improve behaviour and attendance. Through effective pupil participation school gives young people the opportunity to develop critical thinking, advocacy and influencing skills, helping every child to fulfil their potential.” The DCSF guidance highlights support for children’s rights and well-being by: * “Sending a powerful message that children and young people of all ages are citizens too * Recognising children and young people as major stakeholders in society with important contributions to make to their community * Enabling children and young people to influence decisions and services which affect them in order to make them more sensitive to their needs * Helping every child to fulfil their potential” (p6) This resource aims to encourage children to develop confidence in their sense of belonging in the classroom. The lesson plans create opportunities for the children to feel they have a voice, and to understand that their voice is significant. There is emphasis on partner and group work, and on the importance of making a decision and sharing your decision with peers. There are 16 lesson plans, each based on a different children’s book. The characters and situations enable the children to appreciate the value of making choices. Each lesson plan references SEAL objectives and Healthy Schools outcomes.
